When I started this site, I didn’t want to explicitly “rate” movies since it’s such an objective topic. Plus I had some reservations about the rating scales out there. Using the number-out-of-ten method involves leveling each movie with one another and factoring in acting, cinematography, screenplay, directing, etc. the same way for each movie. Same with a percentage. But when you rate a movie based on subjective factors, sometimes you miss the meaning. And as we all know, some of the best movies are the critically scrutinized ones (aka the Notebook.)
Enter, the Take Fifty Two Rating Scale - designed to incorporate factors such as acting and directing, but also the viewer experience, since we all don’t think like critics.
Skip: This is the movie that you really regret committing to. Or the one that you can’t even stand to finish. The kind that leaves you thinking, I realllly wish I could get the last hour and half of my life back. Yeah, it’s that bad. Avoid at all costs.
Watch When Bored: The movie that is maybe worth watching once if nothing else catches your eye. It’s that movie that you watched years ago and sometimes the plot line comes back to mind, but you can’t remember the title because it wasn’t memorable overall. If really in need of a movie, go ahead, watch it.
Watch: You should watch this movie. If simply for the fact that it has a great message or portrays a significant event in history. Watch for the inspiring true story or the never-ending laughs, but don’t add it to your favorites because of the mediocre acting, cheesy script, or poor directing. Watch it so you’re up to date on pop culture and know what you’re talking about in conversation.
Must Watch: This movie should be seen. Audiences love it. Critics love it. It may even be one for nominations during awards season. This movie made history or topped the box office. You’ll recognize great actors, a legendary director, or an ingenious writer. Maybe it features all of the above plus an amazing score or soundtrack in the background. Don’t miss out on this film.
Watch and Watch Again: This is the kind of film that keeps you in your seat during the credits just to ruminate on the genius masterpiece you just witness. Everyone on set knew they were part of something special before they even rolled the cameras. This is the movie that will stand the test of time and you’ll end up watching with your kids. Or nephews. Or just retirement home friends fifty years from now. Watch this film and figure out a way to own this film so you can watch it any gosh darn time you want.
So there ya have it! As always, these are my personal, but I’ll try to keep it realistic. So, despite how much I love a rom-com featuring Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey, I will never tell you to watch Fool’s Gold. In fact, skip it.
